I start on a contract tomorrow, with the slimmest spec I've ever known.

I've been told that my primary focus will be SQL, so I have no idea if they need installations, maintenance, repair, performance review, ETL, reports, or development... I'll find out tomorrow. It'll be the first time I start on a new job on my birthday.

But a second issue is Exchange Server, so I've been reading the book on version 2010. Given a few hours since knowing about my assignment, it will not be enough to be an expert. I have looked after Exchange briefly before, a few years ago, when the general support person was on holiday, and never had to do anything. All I've heard is that 'they are having some problems'

Does anyone know anything about it? Any tips? Is it very database-reliant, or completely independent?

I'll find a forum for this, but it's pointless until I know the problem.

Happy Birthday.

Exchange is a database server, but not a SQL Server db.

Have a look at this link

Here is the best place to start but like you said, not much you can do until you know what the problems are.
