My hosting provider uses sql server 2008 - which management console should I be using ?

I tried to install 2008 management studio express with constant problems, missing files, etc.

I previously used 2005 management studio express and it was s snap to install. Should I remove it from my PC and try to install 2008 console again

Using XP SP2

Thanks,

Allen

2008 MS express should work. I'd recommend developer edition though, but really depends on what you need.

The server is at my provider and I am going to use the console to connect and then do inserts and updates and backups and restores mainly. Do you know what link I would use for the download

Using XP SP2

Developer edition isn't free, only Express is.

I'm just going to log in to the 2008 at my hosting provider, backup and restore as needed, run a few inserts and updates and sometimes deletes on my category and product tables

Can I get by with Express ?

Yes you can get by with Express for that.

Thanks for your help, much appreciated!

One more thing - I was trying to install 2008 MS Express for a few hour last night. It would go thru the checklist and then error out
first - needed powershell, so i installed it
next - needed some 3.5 framework, so i installed that
next - 2005 tools were conflicting (no more information about that) so i searched the web and everyone seemed to agree to remove a 2005 registry key (80)

that got me past that and it was almost finished and then errored out again with just a very cryptic error message

What I did - Uninstalled both 2008 and 2005 consoles and anything that said 'sql server'

So tonight i plan to do a new 2008 MS Express install without any 2005 stuff onboard

any tips ?

I don't have any tips, sounds like you are on the right path.

If it does error out tonight, please post the error.
