Kid going to college next year...may be commuting...Seton Hall, Montclair State, Rutgers..don't know yet

So, I may need to be another car (the insurance in NJ is ridiculous)

What i sthe best value in a used car?

Top of my list is reliability and good to great gas mileage...cheap is also up there

Any ideas?

Hondas are very good cars, but I think the equivalent model of Toyota is usually cheaper and just as good for reliability and gas mileage.

The Toyota equivalent for the Civic is a Corolla.

We test drove a Corolla a couple of years ago and thought that it was cheaply made as far as the interior goes.

You have to look at all the features to decide what you think is the best value. A few years ago I was looking at new Accords vs. Camry and the Accord seemed to be a couple of thousand more for the equivalent features. For example, the Accord had rear drum brakes standard while the Camry had rear disk brakes standard for cars at the same trim level, so you have to make sure you are comparing equivalent models.

It is even more difficult with used cars, because you cannot always find exact matches to compare.

I couldn't get past the cheap interior to even begin comparing other features. The interior was a show stopper for me. And this was on a brand new car. I believe this was in 2008.

Some of you may be forgetting the brief..."Kid going to college next year"...or maybe I'm reading that the change of car is for the kid?. Top quality may not be on the agenda. Price may be the main factor.

Dunno about USA, your roads are different, but my eldest will start driving this Autumn. Top on the agenda for me is good brakes (because on UK back-roads you are bound, when a novice, to come upon a corner that is sharper than you are expecting; plus the ability to avoid an accident when you maybe brake later than a more experienced driver would), and NCAP-5 (top safety rating) as statistically an accident is extremely likely for a young driver.

In terms of MPG my wife now has a Volkswagen Scirocco which we are routinely getting 60 mpg from, and at a steady 50 if will give over 70 mpg.

I forget how our Imperial MPG converts to USA Gallons - I think its about 10%-15% less, so that would be 50 - 60 mpg - I suspect (from previous discussions on here ) that will be seen as a high number for MPG for a state-side car?

Not sure if they are available / common in the US but the Skoda fabia is a good, cheap, safe, reliable little car. Its basically the same car as the Volkswagen polo (made in the same factory by the same people) just with less of a trim level. It's got a lot of room inside for 4 adults , a big boot (we can put all our shopping in it every time). 5 doors.

I like the driving position, you feel quite high up with good visibility, We've got the 1.2L petrol which is very economical as long as you aren't trying to be "quick". And it's cheap.

I've got no idea how all this would apply to the US but for us its great -- mostly city driving with longer trips around Scotland. It's definitely not a fast car though! Though this might be a distinct advantage for a student.

If you were in the UK i'd be able to help you out as am currently working for a business that supplies sites to most of the large used car sites in the UK. We get some good deals..

Oh, if you're looking for economical, go for a diesel..

The problem with the American Focus is the cheap build quality, the European version is much much nicer, much better quality and the chassis stays together (prbabaly due to much better suspension). Don't get them mixed up if you need to rely on handling..
