bak file Error in 2008

I am getting the following error while restoring a .bak file in 2008:

Msg 3241, Level 16, State 0, Line 1
The media family on device 'C:\master.bak' is incorrectly formed. SQL Server cannot process this media family.
Msg 3013, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
RESTORE FILELIST is terminating abnormally.

Any suggestions?

It sounds like the backup file is corrupt. Are you sure it's a native backup and not a Litespeed or Red Gate backup? You'll get that error if you try to use the RESTORE command and it's LS or RG.

It is from another platform, however I do not know which one. The old staff is no longer here. I was told "ySQL"? Is there a way to convert it over?

If it's from mysql, then you can't restore it to SQL Server. There is no way to convert it either.

Whats your opinion on mySQL?..I asked other staff if they meant 'mySQL' and they said it was 'ySQL'...Staff = 2 people...I think I may try downloading mySQL

I'm a Microsoft SQL Server DBA, so my opinion of MySql is biased.
