I have a few questions about Anti Virus software as we have had a few minor issues with ours recently. In our case its not a virus issue, what's happening is that the scheduling of the anti virus software is a bit arbitray and it is screwing up another application that runs overnight.

1) What Anti Virus software do you use on your servers?

2) Did you have any input into what software was selected for use?

3) Is the software installed on the servers or are they scanned remotely?

4) Do you feel that the anti virus software you are using is effective

5) Do you have any success or horror stories about viruses on your server(s)

thanks in advance

steve

1) Sophos
2) Are you kidding? "We'll talk about it and then do it Kristen's way" works for me But the [outsourced] IT guys set it up and look after it (they are very good and know what they are doing, not some fly-by-nite outfit!)
3) I think the virus signature file is central, with an executable on each machine, but its basically whatever confi Sophos recommends / works with
4) yup
5) No horror storied (yet ... touch-wood!)

Not exactly servers, but a big blunder from a big player

1. McAfee currently, used to be Trend
2. No, server guys decide
3. Installed locally but I think it pulls information from a central server
4. Yes
5. Unless the database files are excluded from the virus software, scanning those files could cause huge performance problems. Just make sure your exclusions cover mdf/ndf/ldf/bak/trn/dif/... files.

My company is currently encountering what nathans posted. I hear it's a big nightmare although none of my systems are impacted.
