Hi Folks,

SQL Server 2005 SP2, Windows 2003

I'm having a bit of difficulty getting through the steps to set up SNAC encrypted sessions ('Use strong encryption for data'). Most of the documentation out there starts with 'Install a certificate on the server':

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316898

I have a few questions before even getting to this point

1) Do I need a PKI server with CA services running in the domain?

2) If the answer is no, then how do I generate the CSR? I've tried to generate a CSR from the Certificates MMC Snapin, but I get the error message 'wizard cannot be started...no trusted CA's available'.

3) Do most people use Windows delivered CSR format, or something else (i.e. OpenSSL)?

4) Are there any benchmarks (or collective wisdowm) out there that demonstrates the 'cost' of encrypted sessions?

Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
