There is a certain application that was given to "us" on CD, which requires SQL Server to use.The CD installs Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine version 8.00.194.I thought this was SQL Server 2000, which has 3 service packs. I'm gettin this info from add/remove programs. This is strange because when I browse to SQL Server, via start menu > all programs, I see Microsoft SQL Server 2005.I don't know if was an update that cause this change but I doubt it, seeing as the application works. It didn't work when I tried to install SQL Server 2005 manually on another xp box. I can reinstall this app/SQL combo and get back to "you" on which version I see in start menu...Anyway the problem I am having is there is a MS update for SQL Server 2005 (KB970895) that fails to install on all the XP machines running this application/SQL Server combo. I assume it's because the machines think they have SQL Server 2005 when they don't. I am right to assume this?P.S. All computers are XP PRO with SP3 and full ms updates. Thanks. |

I am going to try and skip the sp2 install and go straight for sp3. Please can someone help, why do I still see two different versions of SQL or is 8.00.194 a version of SQL Server 2005, all I see is SQL Server 2000 for that version. Anywho, downloading/installing sp3 for 2005. I'll post if it goes through and if yes does the application still work. |

Might you have BOTH SQL 2000 and SQL 2005 installed on the machine? |

Nope I have looked all over... Add/Remove Programs shows "Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine" with version 8.00.194Start Menu > All Programs, shows "Microsoft SQL Server 2005"I should add too that I see a computer server icon with a green play button on the taskbar...an icon I believe SQL Server 2005 does not show, seeing as I have 2005 installed on the servers...Plus in the start menu I can go to SQL Server 2005's configuration setup and I can go the the few config settings off the icon.I tried to install SQL Server 2005 sp3 and it says I dont have the correct components to install.Q: WHY IS MOCROSOFT SEEING TWO DIFFERENT VERSIONS AND WHY IS SQL 2005 IN MY START MENU WHEN 2000 SHOULD BE THERE??? |

Last tid bit before I leave for the day...Just finished a reinstall with the CD that puts SQL Server Desktop Engine on the xp boxes and there is no SQL Server 2005 in the start menu.I think microsoft update is getting confused and sends a sp1 update for 2005 and eventually asks for sp2 or something along that line...Anyone ever here of such a thing? |

"Add/Remove Programs shows "Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine" with version 8.00.194Start Menu > All Programs, shows "Microsoft SQL Server 2005""Long shot ... installing MSDE doesn't install any tools. I'm not sure you get anything in Program Files (but I can't remember that far back!)So maybe the stuff in Programs is Client Tools for SQL 2005 (separate thing, perhaps been there for a while? Perhaps came in with the ServicePack - the date on the Programs Folder will indicate when it was installed)Like I said: "Long shot""I should add too that I see a computer server icon with a green play button on the taskbar."Same for both SQL 2000 and SQL 2005. Right Click + About will tell you its (the tool, not SQL) version number (8.nnn or 9.nnn)The Service may be another place to check.programs : Admin tools : ServicesI'm pretty sure that SQL2000 is just called "MSSQLSERVER" (or something like that) whereas SQL 2005 is called something like "Microsoft SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER)"If you need to know for sure ask me and I'll find a server running each and let you know. |

The service name is "MSSQLSERVER". So you agree that SQL 2000 is initially installed. Why would Microsoft Update push a SQL 2005 update? |
