I have just replaced my trial Visual Studio Professional 2008 with a Licensed version, and have completed upgrading via the new product code. However, with the purchased pkg I also have a Developer's Version of SQL 2005. I already have SQL 2008 Express installed and working - along with the SP1 installation. I have a couple of questions. First, shouldn't I have received a 2008 SQL developer's version - is there such a version available and am I entitled to that with my purchase of VS 2008? Second, how do I proceed as far as SQL installation goes? I don't really want to install SQL 2005 if 2008 is available - but I do want to have the latest and greatest version of SQL I'm entitled to. Sure appreciate some advice on this one. Thx. |

I can't help but wonder why I would get a "stale" version (product Key and all!) in a brand new purchase unless I could automatically upgrade to the current version. Is the developer edition so much more advanced than the express edition? Would I install a 2005 developer edition rather than 2008 express edition? It does make installing a new package a bit more convoluted. |

Yes the developer edition is so much more advanced than express edition. Developer edition is equivalent to enterprise edition except that you can't run it on production systems. Developer edition is purely for development. Express edition is the lowest of all of the editions and has limited features. What you use is dependent upon your database requirements. See if you can get away with 2008 express edition.Tara KizerMicrosoft MVP for Windows Server System - SQL Serverhttp://weblogs.sqlteam.com/tarad/Subscribe to my blog"Let's begin with the premise that everything you've done up until this point is wrong." |

Thanks much for the info and advice, Tara. I think I'll follow it too. My conundrum was that I didn't want to tear down my whole setup - which took quite a bit of tweaking and wrangling - only to find that there was minimal gain and perhaps many hassles. I suspect that Express will serve my immediate needs, as I'm a novice to SQL and, for the next few months, am focused more on VS Studio itself. |
