one tidbit I just read about Landau - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lev_Landauquote:
Landau developed a comprehensive exam called the "Theoretical Minimum" which students were expected to pass before admission to the school. The exam covered all aspects of theoretical physics, and between 1943 and 1961 only 43 candidates passed.

I read many of his books, but then was delightfully surprised after many years to hear a recording of his lectures and find out that this Nobel Prize winning physicist sounds like some two-bit New York thug.
