Okay I'm pounding my head on this one .. fresh windows 2008 cluster server ... validation checks out fine.

I go to install SQL 2008 using the wizard ... fails on checking for shared disks .. something to the effect of There were no shared disks available.

Anyone have any idea on this one?

Well, DO you have shared disks available?

It's basically a SAN or other central place where you have disks that can be reached from all nodes in the cluster.

Okay sorry for the silly question .. our cluster admin is out for 2 weeks so I'm stuck trying to figure this out .. yes the drives we want to use for this are showing up in the cluster admin tool and they are available and online. That much I can check :)

But you wrote the setup complained about "No shared disks found"?

That is correct the set up said that message but the cluster validation tool and what not all show our disks as set up correctly and they are online.

And the permissions to the shared disks are ok?

Yep ... by the way I appreciate your responses. This one is confusing because there is no reason the install shouldn't work.

Post the exact error and the messages from the SQL setup logs.

This is the error we are getting:

The cluster on this computer does not have a shared disk available. To continue, at least one shared disk must be available.

Then something is wrong in Cluster Administrator, perhaps they aren't in the SQL cluster group.

I am also having this issue, the same message:

"The cluster on this computer does not have a shared disk available. To continue, at least one shared disk must be available."

I'm sure the quorum disk is OK, it's SQL Server 2008 installing on Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2.

Any suggestions on what to check?

This is the 1st node.

Well I just fixed mine so I will share what I did to fix us.

First I ran the "remove node" from the cluster installation ... deleted all the services in cluster admin for the SQL cluster that were in there .. uninstalled SQL .. deleted the directories (this was key) .. rebooted .. made sure that everything eas clean .. then did the install and was good to go.

I hate to say it but you may need to make a call to Microsoft. Only other thing I can suggest is to try creating the clustered service for SQL ahead of time and assiging the storage to it and see if that works.

Good Morning,

In order to install SQL clustered services you must first run cluster administrator and created a shared disk resource.
A shared disk generally speaking is a volume shared between 2 servers on seperate hardware. It usually resides in a SAN or a JBOD, it can be fiber channel, iscsi, infiniband, any of these will be exactly what it's intended for.

if you need further assistance reach and i'm sure myself or someone on here will be happy to point you in the right direction.

hi
is there any possibility to have a "shared disk" for a cluster with a local hard disk attached to one of them instead of a separate storage media? for example i use one of the system's secondary hard disk which is not used in any way and share it for the other node of the cluster. the share name may be the same and both may use the same share name to access the disk. is it possible?
i don't want to use any storage media other than a hard disk. is it possible to use a hard disk storage media as the shared disk for the cluster in any way?
thx

Hamidi,

To avoid your question getting lost in an old topic, you should instead post your question in a new topic.
