Full DB Backups in a Log-Shipping Situation

Hello,

I have inherited the follow scenario. It is a simple log shipping scenario to a standby/readonly database on another server. SQL 2005 x64 (v.3073).

These guys NEVER scheduled the full SQL nightly backup (they do have a tape agent so it wouldn't be a total loss if something goes wrong). Questions:

1) If I configure a full SQL DB backup (primary db) on a nightly basis, could that break the log shipping?

2) Assuming that we setup the full backup just fine, would I be able to perform normal point-in-time restores with the current (log-shipped) t-log backups?

I want to get a full backup setup ASAP, but there's no test environment here - I'm a bit nervous to make changes.

Any feedback would be apprecitated. Thanks!

Log shipping provides the full backup. Did someone delete it?

Full backups outside of the LS maintenance plan can not break log shipping. If you performed transaction log backups outside of the LS maintenance plan, then that would break log shipping.

And yes you can use your full backup and the LS tlog backups to recover.

The full backup (one that was used in the initial setup) was from months ago...althought the original .bak file is still around, the transaction log backups from previous months have been purged.

I will go ahead and schedule the full daily backup. Thankfully it is small (20GB).

Tara, thanks for the response. You're always so helpful, and it is appreciated!

When I mentioned that log shipping provides the full backup, I'm referring to the fact that it creates a full backup job for you that runs on the schedule you specified in the LS maintenance plan config. Did you check if that job was deleted?
