I am looking at the possibility of installing multiple instances of 2008 Reporting Services on the same server. Has anyone ever implemented this? Were there any issues or gotchas? I may or may not have the backend database server running of the same server, but I would only have one instance of the database engine and let all the instances of Reporting Services share the same database engine.

If you haven’t done this in SQL 2008 have you done it with 2005 Reporting Services?

Multiple instances of RS shouldn't be a problem. GO AHEAD.

Yes, I have done it in SQL 2005. It supports that. One thing I did was instead of default Report Configuration I used Manual Report Configuration and that is important.

Why do you want multiple instances?

I want to be able to have different security designs on each instance to meet the needs of various user and developer groups.

You can put security at the folder level on the report server. Is this insufficient?

I know you can, but what I need is to be able in some cases to turn a whold RS instance over to some groups to basically do their own thing without worrying about what they will do to other people that might be sharing the same instance.

This is for an orgnization that has many semi-independant groups with little interaction. I don't want to put my DBA team in the position of doing detailed Reporting Services administration to make sure everyone plays nice together.

I would like to be able to share the hardware and especially the Enterprise Edition license to reduce the overall cost to the company.
