I've installed a default instance of sql server 2005 on my local machine and I'm having trouble getting it to connect to my machine.
for example typing in "." in Server Name. I did mixed mode when I installed. Any advice is appreciated.

Server Type : Database Engine
Server Name : .

Authentication : Windows Authentication

ERROR:
Cannot connect to ..
An error has occured while connecting to the server.
When connecting to SQL server 2005, this may be caused by the fact that under the default settings sql server does not allow remote
connections.....

But I'm not connecting remotely, I am just trying to get a connection to my local machine.
Thank you.

Enable Remote connection in Surface area config.

Try (local) and HostName. To check what your hostname is go to Start..Run..cmd..hostname.

Enabling remote connections in surface area config will not help when you aren't connecting remotely.
