That damn Hawking radiation destroying our precious black holes!Actually, isn't proving that Hawking radiation exists one of the things that the Large Hadron Collider is supposed to do? Bummer for France and Switzerland if it doesn't exist. CODO ERGO SUM |

hopefully they find it. If they do hawking will surely get a nobel. He certainly deserves it. Trouble is, those silly nobel folks think you need experimental verification before handing out nobels in physics. What gives? That's why you'll never get a nobel if you are string theorist. elsasoft.org |

Or if you are a mathematician. There is no Nobel prize for mathematics. The story is that at the time Nobel created is prizes, one of the leading mathematicians was having an affair with his wife, and under no circumstances did he ever want to give the guy a medal.Boycotted Beijing Olympics 2008 |

yes, well, they have the Fields medal and Abel Prize. Plus, (as feynman observed) all proofs in math are trivial. How do I know this? because if you hear one mathematician explaining the most complicated proof to another, at the end she says "see, it's trivial" and the other guy says, "yes, of course, it's obvious now. trivial."You wouldn't give a Nobel for something trivial would you? elsasoft.org |

It the LHC does create a black hole that swallows the earth, that would be a good explanation for why the SETI people haven't found any advanced civilizations. Once knowledge reaches an advanced level, someone creates a black hole and wipes it out.CODO ERGO SUM |

who says getting swallowed by a black hole isn't winning? seems like a good way to go to me. plus your image will be frozen forever into the event horizon (tinged a bit red) so your buddies will always have a pleasant picture to look at. elsasoft.org |

It probably won’t be the LHC that does it. It will be the next generation BHC (Black Hole Collider) that takes the micro black holes created by the LHC and collides them to make heavier, stable black holes.I’m hoping that they build that one on some real estate we can afford to lose, like one of the moons of Pluto.CODO ERGO SUM |

Hmm. I'll have to remember to strike a heroic pose at that point, even though my legs would be getting ripped off by the tidal forces..... |
