Hi,I currently am running 64bit SQL2005 workgroup edition.I want to upgrade it to Microsofts trial of SQL2008 64bit.I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions on doing an "upgrade" vs doing a side by side install, and moving the databases over ? Also wondering, how long does the install take? Am I offline for this period?I am thinking an upgrade would be easier, but raise the issue of possible problems. Maybe somebody has had experience with this and can lend a hand. I have about a dozen databases. Thanks very much!mike123 |

why would you want to upgrade to a trial edition when it will soon expire.I would advice installing a seperat instance and migrating the databases.I have instances of 2000, 2005 express and just installed 2008 express on the same vista laptop, and on our remote server, we have 2005 and will be installing a seperate instance of 2008 web edition alongside. If you install trial, when it expires, I guess u will loose your data |

You think I will lose my data ?? I havent looked but I would have imagined this would definately not be the case.I want to upgrade to the trial edition, because its not limited in anyways (correct me if I am wrong) and I can 6 months free. At that point I believe I can upgrade by just getting a serial # from my host (I lease the license) |

Cant find any documentation on SQL2008, but it appears you don't "loose" your data after 6 months in SQL2005, just get locked out and have to restore it to a functional DB.I'm unable to find any documentation on how to upgrade from SQL2008 trial, to my preferred licensed version. If I have to re-install SQL, this idea might not be worth it. |

I said. "I guess..." My installtion hasnt expired yet.Developer edition gives you virtually all the works. If you are not looking for a server edition. And costs about $49 http://www.microsoft.com/sql/howtobuy/editionspricing.mspx |

unforunately developer edition is not going to work for me .. I plan to trial enterprise edition for 6 months, then get a license key for the standard edition after my trial period.Has anybody upgraded to SQL2008 Enterprise trial from SQL2005 ? On a live database ? Am I looking at downtime during install ? (Even if everything goes well ) I'm a bit scared to proceed on this as I'm unaware of any possible complications.Any advice much appreciated !Thanks,mike123 |
