Hi there,

as it seems my company is moving towards DB/2 as a second platform, is there a similar site (forum) for DB/2 ?

Cheers,
Frank

Thanks for your offer. I will come back to it, when I need to.
But I wonder, how DB/2 DBA's enhance their knowledge.
Are they born with it or do they all have premium support contracts with IBM?

Cheers,
Frank

Ah yes, subcription....
I'm struggling with this point. Snitz supports I think three or more different levels of subscription. for most categories here subscription seems to be set to topic level. So you have to watch carefully to catch all interesting topics. and I think I'll miss a lot of those topics here. And in addition the standard notification mail from Snitz isn't really meaning full at all. Just a notice that someone else has replied. I mailed graz some time ago a slight modification I did myself here to make it more meaningful, but haven't heard anything yet.

As for the start of DB/2. This is just a plan right now. Our mainframe uses it and some smart consultants came up with the idea that it must also be a good solution on windows. If it start at all, it will somewhen ?!? in 2004 or 2005. but I thought it doesn't hurt me to stay informationally ahead of the rest

Cheers,
Frank

Ahhh but Frank - remember:

DB2 is the label attached to a suite of unrelated products. DB2 on the mainframe is different from DB2 on AIX is different from DB2 on a PC ... they had independent product development teams, they support different standards, and it is absolutely NOT TRUE that DB2 is a platform independent product. Fire those consultants and stick with SQL Server.

True....I'm sure the deployment is different on different platforms...and I'm sure the GUIs (what no GUI on the mainframe?) may be different...but the objects, catalogs, sql are the same...

Also, most of our larger client/server udb deployments are AIX based...no windows there...like Oracle, they seem to have less problems on unix based o/s's...

And if you've never been exposed to O/S390...and they're telling you have to go there...might as well by a gun...

I still have to make return trips every so often...(like now..)

Well, let me know how your experience differs, but I'm saying the above is not true - the SQL is different. You can execute certain commands on "mainframe DB2" that are not implemented on other platforms. So you can't necessarily migrate a mainframe DB2 database to an AIX DB2 installation and expect it to work flawlessly. Same in reverse.

I had an unpleasant experience dealing with this several years back overseeing a banking conversion. Everyone *assumed* that we could take DB2 objects on the mainframe and simply migrate them to AIX or to Windows; that's not always the case. What a headache!

Like what commands? I'd be amazed to find that DB2 O/S390 is more feature rich...

additionally, what version? Back around 5, they definetly were light years apart...I'm not so sure now with V8

I downloaded it a while ago for windows...got to get around to installing it...

Let you know how it looks...but the application programming and reference guide is for all platforms...

Anyway...what's new about V8

I like this sound.
After all the same consultants suggested to use Java to harmonize our IT structure, kick out Oracles (not that I don't like this one), use XP ....

I had a funny discussion them with how to pronounce SQL ?
I don't really think they are clever and smart at all, but I'm definitely sure they earn twice as much as I

Cheers,
Frank
