Hello i typically only ever used sqlexpress. We are a new startup that has produced several applications that we plan hosting on our newly acquired virtual machine. I think we have outgrown express and want to purchase SQL 2012 standard. Mostly because we plan on doing some snapshot replication to our clients and we need to weekly updates of their data. We have a database for each of out client districts (which currently is three and hope to aspire to about 12 in about four year time). So my team is ready to make the purchase however it is quite confusing with the CAL's or core's. I see a product on ebay for about $600 then again the same thing is $1600 somewhere else online. Based on our needs can anyone point us in the direction of which version we should get??Cartesian Yak |

I'd go with Standard, but I wouldn't buy it off eBay. I'd buy it directly from Microsoft to be sure I had the correct licensing and support.BTW, you might want to buy the Developer edition (about $50) which has the same features as Enterprise, though you cannot (by the license) use it in production. It is however, very useful for development since it has all Enterprise features. |

There are some criteria on this post , to make you consider some of the options - http://www.sqlserver-dba.com/2011/01/sql-server-2008-licensing.htmlDeciding on which version , such as Enterprise versus Standard, review the features available , and see if they are features you may require. There are certain limitation on StandardJack Vamvas--------------------http://www.sqlserver-dba.com |
