With the upgrade over the weekend, the forums are much, much faster. First, my apologies for not doing this sooner. I made quite a few modifications to the Snitz codebase and wasn't looking forward to making them all again. It turned out to be much easier than I thought.

The biggest improvement is in the number of SQL statements sent to the server. I wrote an article on tuning the forums (http://www.sqlteam.com/item.asp?ItemID=6891) that highlights that. The forum homepage was sending 100+ SQL statements to the server. And the active topics page was much, much worse.

For example, In the old Snitz code for the active topics page, a main query ran that returned all the topics. As additional informaton was needed, new queries were run. These queries ran once per row -- and there were a bunch of them. It seems as each new feature was added, they added a query rather than rewriting the original query. Something I know I've never done

Not only is this not very effecient from a SQL Server standpoint it also really brings network latency to the fore. Since the client (web server) is making 100-500 round trips to SQL Server per page, any little slowness in the network is magnified tremendously.

In the new version of Snitz, it's all integrated into one honking big SELECT statement that is SQL Server, Access and MySQL friendly. There aren't any new indexes with the new code base. It's purely a matter of joining tables rather than selecting them separately.

And if you like the look (and speed) of these forums you can download your own copy for free at www.snitz.com.

I am really liking the upgrade. It is so much faster, and I haven't encountered any errors. I also like the new look and feel.

Thanks Graz!

The quick reply is a configurable feature of this version that provides a reply window (without all the fancy editing buttons) on the same page as the thread you're reading, so you don't have to click reply and go to a new page to type a quick answer.
