| i have been given user credentials and IP address to create a linked server toi work with a clients server. but could I just login just using ssms as you would with a server on site. |

when the SQL Server is configured to listening on that port instead of the default port noor the remote server may be behind a firewall and that is the port no configured in the firewall for access
