Good Day. I am a bit curious how online indexing works . Does the database system himself decide the index has reached a threashold value and rebuilds the index on the fly or is during a routine index rebuild job the index is rebuilt on the side and only when the rebuilt is complete the defragged index is replaced ?Any ideas ?

SQL Server doesn't kickoff the rebuild for you based on thresholds. Maintenance scripts do that. An online index rebuild just means (from BOL):

quote:

Specifies whether underlying tables and associated indexes are available for queries and data modification during the index operation.

It's available in Enterprise edition.
