Is there any query which should tell which step job is processing instead of looking into the jobactivity monitor.

run this: msdb.dbo.sp_help_job

look at current_execution_step column.

another trick: turn on profiler and then launch jobactivity monitor. then you can see what it is doing to get the data.

guess what? it's calling msdb.dbo.sp_help_job
