I have inherited a SQL Server that is at the end of its lifecycle..
One of the databases is encrypted...and the backups will not restore on the new server. No one knows where the key is nor what the password would be. Is there any way to copy this database to the new server?
Thanks for any help you can give...

Rebuild it from scratch: script the DDL, export/import the data, etc. Good luck.

TDE? If so, you need to back up the certificates from the master database and restore those on the new server, look in books Online for the details of exactly what needs doing.

Can't recall if you need any passwords for that or if sysadmin rights is enough.
