It's not documented at all, neither are many of the operations and it's not designed to be human-readable. What's the reason for this request?

Maybe, but the log is not an audit log, it's there for database integrity. It doesn't store the operations in an easy-to-understand way, and it does not store logins, host names or anything else you need from an audit.

Nope, there's no free log reader for SQL 2005 (there was one for SQL 2000, but it does not work on SQL 2005 or above). Log readers typically start around $1000 per license.
