I have created DB maintenance plan for SQL server 2000 which takes FULL backups of all user databases every night at 8:30 PM and remove database backup files that are older than 3 days.
This maintenance plan works fine except Thursday night. It backups db regularly but when it removes file, ONLY Thursday night it couldn’t remove particularly ONE DB FILE which is older than 3 days which means the ONE DATABASE has MONDAY NIGHT BACKUP file exists after finished maintenance on Thursday. Again, on Friday night the maintenance plan deletes two files for same database. So it deletes both old backup files (MONDAY AND TUESDAY) on Friday night for that particular DB.

Does anyone know why only one DB has issue for deleting old backup file on Thursday only?

Thanks in advance.

It's likely because the file is in use. Perhaps your tape backup software is still backing that file up to tape? You can use process explorer to see what has a handle on the file.

Tara,

I quickly check with our Infrastructure guy and found that tape backup software scheduled/started at 9:00 PM and this DB maintenance plan normally finished around 8:50 PM. Even I checked prevously finished maintenance plans log files and it all normally finish around 8:45 to 8:50 PM (Before tape backup schedule job started).

Well you'll need to investigate what else would have a handle on it. Use process explorer for this.
