I'm new to the forum and have found you from necessity. I know nothing about SQL other than it runs my Goldmine CRM and that my support company for the CRM software do not support SQL.We have received a number of scary messages whilst in our CRM system but I have no idea what they mean. I do know we are loosing data and my external IT company who controls our network have said that 'the SQL is spiralling out of control' again, I have no idea what that involves.I'm therefore urgently looking for someone who could 'fix' my database for a reasonable cost. I had found one option through a contact but his cost to even look at the problem was just silly money. We use an external IT company for our network and I would need you to liase with them as IT is not my subject. We are a small company and losing our data could see us close. So if anybody could help, would you get in touch with me asap.ThanksMelanie |

Consultant's aren't cheap. What's your budget look like? (My rate equates to around $120/hour and that's cheap because of where I live)Where in the UK?--Gail ShawSQL Server MVP |

My budget is approx £1000. I need a fixed cost solution as I have no idea if the fix will be 1 hour or 3 days. I need to stick to my budget as we do not have the funds to contract someone on an hourly basis.M |

Hiring a (even remotely competent consultant) will cost you more than you have. Also you will have a *really* hard time getting a good one if you don't know 1st thing about your environment. If you are willing to get your hands a little dirty I'd advice that you do post those scary messages. There are more people here who are real data corruption / dba experts (I don't include myself in this list by the way, I'm just a developer.) who contribute their experience and time for free. The guy that wrote the sql server consistency checking tools posts here sometimes (among a great deal of other awesome people). You'll get good free advice.Charlie===============================================================Msg 3903, Level 16, State 1, Line 1736The ROLLBACK TRANSACTION request has no corresponding BEGIN TRANSACTION |

And to be totally blunt, there's no way I would ever take a fixed-cost project without knowing what I'm getting into. From the limited descriptions I can't tell if this is a 5 minute problem or a 5 week problem. The 'scary' messages are an absolute minimum as well as some more details of what the IT company meant by 'the SQL is spiralling out of control'--Gail ShawSQL Server MVP |

you could initially log a case with MS support perhaps so you get an idea on what you will take on, otherwise, post the "scary messages" as Tara suggested--------------------keeping it simple... |

0) Are you sure you are using "Microsoft SQL Server"? If some other flavour of SQL I'm afraid this is not the forum for you.1) Get some help to connect to the database using some tools that will let you "do stuff". SQL Server provides tools to do this, so its likely they are already installed. But you may be using a "Personal" version of SQL Server, the tools for which can be more limited2) If you can get to that point, and have an Administrative logon, then there is a simple command to check the database consistency of your database. If that gives you error messages you have problems that need looking into urgently. Almost certainly the corruptions will have been caused by hardware failure of some type and if that has not been / is not fixed any effort put into fixing it will not be well spent as the hardware fault will cause it to happen again. On the other hand if that check does not find any corruptions in the database you can sleep easy that the data in the database is safe and your problem is elsewhere. Perhaps your database needs some tuning, ... there are a host of possible causes.3) I'd like to see your "scary messages" too ... but in the meantime:"it runs my Goldmine CRM and that my support company for the CRM software do not support SQL."How is it possible that Goldmine CRM is a mission critical (I assume?) tool in your company and there is no support for SQL? Do you mean that the vendors don't provide support for SQL - that would seem very scary - or maybe your local IT people have no SQL DBA skills (in which case Goldmine support should ...)"my external IT company who controls our network have said that 'the SQL is spiralling out of control' again"If they said it pretty much like that, word-for-word, they either have no idea what they are taking about and are blowing hot air, or are trying to position you for a large bill. I would have expected them to give some explanation for what the issue is, particular if its "again" and they have knowledge of what happened before (in which case why have they not put something in place to prevent it happening again, or at least "alert" if it happens again?)Bad news: your budget will get you half a day of someone like me, provided you are reasonably geographically close, and that certainly won't be enough to do a good job of a) fixing the problem nor b) putting some processes in place to alert you in future if there are similar issues.Good news: If you can self-help I (and many others) provide advice on this forum for free (case of beer always welcome though ... ) |
