Hi,

I need a good program that will allow me to design and deploy an ERD diagram. Something comparable to Visio but with the capability of deploying the design to an actual SQL database. (Preferably free)

What I have found that partly meets the requirement is SQL Developer:

But it lacks the capability of generating and deploying scripts generated from the design back to the server. It will allow you to create the scripts and deploy them but that kinda defeats the purpose of designing if scripts can't be auto-generated from the design and deployed.

Anyone know of any good free ERD designing and deployment tools available? I have a Visio license but like I said, it allows reverse engineering of a database but not deployment.

December issue of SQL Server Magazine had an article written by Michelle Poolet on data modeling software. You have to be a subscriber to access the website and the article though. The vendors she had reviewed were:


1.  Quest Software's Toad Data Modeler for SQL Server 3.5, Xpert Edition
2.  Altova's DatabaseSpy 2011, Enterprise Edition
3.  Datanamic Solutions' DeZign for Databases 6.2, Expert Edition
4.  Embarcadero Technologies' ER/Studio Enterprise 8.5
5.  CA's ERwin Data Modeler (DM) 7.3
6.  Sybase's PowerDesigner Studio Enterprise 15.2

If you are a subscriber by any chance, the InstantDoc ID is #128921. I only flipped through the article, but from what I recall, none of them were free. You could look up the vendor sites to see if they have free versions.
