Hi on our SQL SERVER DB Servers, Backup file systems are configured in the SQL Cluster as dependencies. Recently we had a mishap, the backup file systems were lost( drive was lost) from the DB servers which resulted in the cluster shutting the database down. Do the backup file systems really need to be in the SQL Cluster.CheersMurali |

No, the backup volumes (whether mount point or LUN) do not have to be part of the SQL Cluster Group. You can setup a separate cluster group for the backup volumes and use that. This will require some changes on your part. First, you will need another IP address/name for the new cluster group and then you need to modify all backups to use the UNC path to the backup SQL group. With that said, I would be very concerned with my system if there were issues that caused a loss of the volume. If that can happen on the backup volume - what's to say it doesn't happen on the data volume or the log volume which would bring SQL Server down also. In fact, if that happens I would expect there to be corruption in the databases which is even more of an issue.Jeff |

if the backup drive is mounted the you need to investigate the root drive, losing a drive is not a good sign--------------------keeping it simple... |
