I just installed SQL Svr Express express edition. I used mixed authenication when I installed. After the installation I was unable to connect to the database using windows authenication nor when I used SA with the password I created. I'm absolutely sure of the password I created for SA.

I also have SQL Express 2005 DEV and I think that may be the problem. I did an initial installation rather than upgrading. I create a new instance and called it SQLEXPRESS2008.

When I opened management studio(2008) myinstance name (SQLEXPRESS2008) showed in the list but I could not connect.

There error message I'm getting is A network-related or instance-specefic error occured while establishing a connection to sql Server. The server was not found or was not accessible verify ..blah..blah.. MS Sql Server Error 53

I'm using Windows 7 and I have verified that all my services are started when I went to computer management. Although I did have services for both Sql2005DEV ( I have visual studio 2008) and Sql Express 2008

Can anyone offer advice on what the problem is and how I can fix it?

Thanks

It's not a login problem. The other installation should not interfere with it. Are you trying to connect locally or remotely?

I'm trying to connect locally on my windows 7 machine ... just figured out my problem...... I was using only the server name. I looked at the sql management 2005 and noticed I was uing ComputerName\Instance name. When I used the computername\instancename with sql server 2008 I connected.

Sorry for wasting your time espescially since you made such a super fast response.
