Has anybody done an inplace upgrde of OS and SQL2008?Can you share success/horror stories?We have a Windows Server 2003/SQL 2005 need to upgrade it in place or buy a new box.....the discussion will help.As always, thanks for responses. RegardsParesh MotiwalaBoston, USA |

You could test it out on a virtual copy or cloud copy. Plenty of free /trial options available |

I've never done an in-place upgrade of either, personally or professionally. I don't know anyone who has, at least not in the past 10 years. |

Upgrading from 2005 to 2008 is not as problematic as from 2000 to 2005. I prefer to install 2008 and use a backup from 2005 db rather than doing an in-place upgrade. Upgrading windows may give you a few issues around firewall settings but I don't think anything major.One issue I had was with (very) old applications. The method they used to connect to SQL is no longer supported in 2008, I forget the name of the method but if you use old applications you might want to check it out. |
