guess i'm just suspicious when someone is still running sql 2000 RTM. post indicates they've been using it for some time, so why no updates applied?

2000 RTM was vulnerable to the "slammer" worm. That one was pretty serious. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SQL_Slammer

Nah, there are unfortunately loads of businesses out there with people using non Service Packed versions..

The mail client failing was a 'feature' of SQL 2000, got it loads of times, even with SP4, think it actually ended up being MSSearch causing the issue bizarrely, but is probably more hardware/software compatibility related.

The only way I ever found around it was to reinstall the outlook client.
