It's ages since we had a poll so I have decided to set one up - wierdly it's vaguely work related for me.

1) Do you have a bluetooth enabled mobile device that you normally carry around with you (e.g. a mobile phone aka cellphone)?
2) Do you normally leave bluetooth enabled?
3) When your bluetooth is enabled do you have your device visible to other devices?
4) Have you renamed your device i.e. the default name it will show when it is visible on bluetooth?
5) Have you ever received an unsolicited message via bluetooth?
6) Would you accept an unsolicited message via bluetooth?
7) Are you aware of or have you experienced bluetooth marketing?
8) Are you aware of bluejacking?

Just to get the ball rolling here are my answers
1) yes (love my new HTC desire)
2) no
3) no
4) no (but intend to)
5) no
6) no
7) aware
8) yes

cheers

7) yes + No
8) yes

rest are No, and I have no need / interest ....

Yours, Old Fart.

Actually, probably not quite true, I would use Bluetooth for hands-free in car, but being Old Fart I rarely go out so not a pressing need ...

Interestingly (or not as the case may be) I discovered yesterday that Iphone's won't accept files via bluetooth (my wife wanted one of my ringtones), they will only connect to handsfree type systems. Presumably that means that they are immune to the joys of bluetooth marketing, which is quite ironic really as the work on which this survey is based is aimed largely at people most likely to have an Iphone, and yes I do mean people younger than Kristen (and me)

Is that the new-fangled technology known as WiFi?

No 1 Daughter installed some Sonos App on her iPhone to be able to control the Sonos home-hifi we have here (great system, highly recommended by the way ...)

I presumed, wrongly, that because the individual Sonos boxes are wifi and EACH have a CAT-5 connector on the back, that she could use her iPhone anywhere in the house ... not a bit of it, she has to be in range of the single WiFi router thingie box we have, and that has to talk (by cable) to some central point which is then re-broadcast, wirelessly, by Sonos to the particular unit that she is trying to control. Surfice to say that her summation of using an iPhone to control a Sonos box was "It's pants" !!

So I suppose that the Sonos boxes are using a proprietary method of communicating wirelessly ... pity really, given how poor WiFi boxes are at getting a signal through walls, and from one end of a house to the other, the repeater-network that Sonos creates would be ideal as a WiFi Cloud ... or Bluetooth for that matter ...

Thanks to all those who responded. You may (or may not) be interested to know that there is an increasing trend, in this country at least, towards Bluetooth "marketing", which largely appears to consist of public money being used to send Bluetooth messages to (young) people, in particular in towns and at festivals (Kristen, think Woodstock) and such like.

Superficially it appears to be a reasonable idea and I know some people are very excited about it. However, our scientific survey suggests to me that it is doomed to failure. I've certainly asked several young people (well younger than me which doesn't say much) and they either don't know if they have bluetooth, have an IPhone (which is immune to all this) or most likely, don't bother to turn it on.

On the positive side a quick scan around the office showed a few people who obviously leave their Bluetooth on. So look out "Big Boy" you will be getting a message soon

Yep and dorky indeed!

My husband was on a conference call yesterday afternoon using his cell phone, and he had his jawbone blue tooth thingy in his ear. I kept thinking how unsexy he looked.
