Can do replication between two sql servers which are on windows XP OS ?

Yes, but it more depends on the SQL edition rather than the OS version.

What edition of SQL Server do they have installed?

Its Standard Edition.

Standard edition isn't supported on XP. You can use developer edition or sql express instead. SQL Express just doesn't allow it to be the publisher, but it can be the subscriber.

When i fire this command "SELECT @@VERSION"
i got following result

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - 9.00.1399.06 (Intel X86) Oct 14 2005 00:33:37 Copyright (c) 1988-2005 Microsoft Corporation Standard Edition on Windows NT 5.1 (Build 2600: Service Pack 2, v.2096)

"Standard Edition" in that string is for the OS. To get the info for SQL, check out the queries in this link: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/321185

By the way, build 1399 is the RTM version of SQL Server. There have been thousands of bug fixes since that build. SP3 for SQL 2005 should be installed ASAP along with the October security hotfix (at a minimum). I'd go straight to CU9 instead though. So my recommendation is to install SP3 and then CU9.

SELECT SERVERPROPERTY('productversion'), SERVERPROPERTY ('productlevel'), SERVERPROPERTY ('edition')
this query gives me following result

9.00.1399.06 RTM Standard Edition

Hmmm, as far as I know, standard edition isn't supported. I'm surprised it allowed the install.

But to answer your question, replication is supported on standard edition.

Replication is fully explained in Books Online, the SQL Server documentation.
