Hi

I have been trying to install sqlserver express 2008. Previously I had 2005 which I completely removed manually with registry entry as it was not uninstalled properly.
I got error
The MOF compiler could not connect with the WMI server. This is either
because of a semantic error such as an incompatibility with the existing WMI
repository or an actual error such as the failure of the WMI server to start.

WMI services are auto started on system
I tried to remove and rebuild the repository, but then after installation failed.
I have system local and user locale same as suggested by some thread.

Here is log file generated by diagnostic utility:

I do not know if this would apply to your situation. Last fall(sept 09) I purchased a developers license to SS 2008, to install on my vista laptop and home pc. On each machine I had 2005 evaluation version installed, which had just expired.
I did the installation on my laptop first, and it failed to to the full install. After fooling with it for a while, I gave up for a month or two due to unrelated issues.
Then in November I picked it up again. First I reset my laptop to the Factory Image Settings, popped in the SS 2008 installation DVD. About 75 minutes later, I had a successful install.

A week or so later, I tackled my desktop vista system, reset to factory image, did the ss2008 install and it also worked fine.
