I've been told by our folks that manage the licensing for our company that every 3 years we have to repurchase all SQL licenses and that each year it also costs 30% for software maintenance (which includes free upgrades). Does that sound right? It sure doesn't to me.Say we buy 2 SQL 2005 Enterprise licenses for a server with 2 processors (processor licenses) for 50,000 (25,000 each processor). That means we pay 15,000 each year for software maintenance for SQL on this server plus in 3 years we have to pay 50,000 again to repurchase the SQL licenses and then 15,000 a year after that and then in 3 more years pay 50,000 to repurchase the SQL licenses...on and on and on. That just doesn't sound right to me at all. But that's what I'm being told. Can anyone elaborate and explain how it should work? Thanks in advance,Van |

"It sure doesn't to me."Nor me!My understanding is that a few years ago MS moved everyone to annual subscriptions. So before you could "buy" SQL Server 2000 Enterprise, and then pay an upgrade to SQL 2005 when you were ready to upgrade. After the change there is no upgrade price. Either you are on annual subscription, or you have to buy the new version "from scratch".Maybe that is what they are referring to? |

Yea, that's how I understand that it should work but they are saying that we pay 30% a year and then every 3 years we have to do a full repurchase of the license. I think they are confussed or getting ripped off. |

I hear you. I'm going to have to let them know that it's 20% a year if you agree to a 3 year software maintenance time frame and that you don't have to repurchase anything. Just 20% perpetually (renewed every 3 years) basically and all upgrades are included. It's 30% a year if you agree to a 1 year time frame and renew yearly. |

Worth a look on Microsoft's site to see what their Licence terms actually are??If you are referring to a hosting company (providing SQL and Web hosting for your application, say) then I guess they have the cost of rolling out the major version upgrades for you. But that aint re-buying everything from scratch, and I would have thought "When there is a major upgrade there will be some T&M charges too" would have covered that better.I'm at a loss to work out where they are coming from on this. It strikes me its either ignorance or greed - either of which would cause me, personally, to kick them into touch I have to say ... |
