I just got my hands on my brand new Acer 3810 laptop with a 13.3" screen and 8 hours of battery life...sooo sweet  But what's the deal with all this preinstalled stuff?? What are the chances of me actually wanting "Chicken Invaders 2" and "Granny in Paradise"??? | I love the acer range of laptops. | Hmmm ... I've been looking at an HP ProBook Notebook - the 4515s or similar. I like the separate arrow keys etc. and a wide screen (I think that model is the 15" but I'm toying with the 17")Any opinions on what things I should consider / reject would be appreciated. AMD / Intel? How much RAM?Needs to run SQL 2008 / IIS but only locally for DEV, i.e. I'm not too bothered if it is a bit sluggish.Wanted for DEV work away from base, and stand alone demos etc. |

| I hate HP laptops. Once thing the battery life sucks, another is the NVidia graphics card is disaster. Mine worked only for 1 year, though I didn't use laptop for gaming or any special graphics software. Changing the motherboard for just graphics card is out of option. | I wouldn't go for a Dell, they have seriously gone downhill in the last couple of years.Kristen - out of everything on a laptop, go for a fast HDD as it will make the difference over nearly any other component. RAM is your choice, but as much as you can afford, although 4GB is generally the most you can fit in a laptop at the moment.Acers are good, but if you want to spec it up yourself and want it fairly cheap, take a look at www.pcspecialist.co.uk. I have brought a couple of laptops and a desktop off them and generally wouldn't use anywhere else now. Their customer service is brilliant as well, one of the laptops I brought off them had an error on the motherboard (I brought it without OS, so it only came about one installed), they came and collected it and I had it back within a couple of days all fixed. |

| My first choice is Fujitsu-Siemens. I've had 3 of them and they have all been totally awesome. I would have bought one this time also if it wasn't for the greats specs of the acer...1.6kg, 13.3" screen and 8h battery is *perfect* for my home use.- LumbagoIf the facts don't fit the theory, change the facts. The worst customer service I have experienced out of any IT company. Also, you order a machine that is available and suddenly have to wait 2 months for a piece of glass for the screens or some other component, but they do not tell you this until after the delivery date has been and gone.Perhaps its different outside the UK (not sure where you are from), but here they are simply awful. They also use old parts that are no longer in use or being phased out. I brought a Dimension off them without fully checking the specs (I know, I should have) and it turned up with a motherboard without a PCI-E slot, only PCI. This was when PCI was on its way out! I don't expect everything to be perfect, but I don't expect a hardware manufacturer to be using outdated technology in brand new PCs. |
