I intended to install MS SQL Server 2008 Express Advanced Edition and MS SQL Server Management Studio Advanced Edition, because I wish to work through the examples in a textbook which uses this edition.

Having happily used SQL Server 2005 Express, this seemed like a simple task that would take maybe three hours. My first obstacle was that it seems that 32 bit users are no longer "allowed" to install SQL Server step by step and forced to use a badly designed Web Installer page. Because I'm working on a laptop with a small screen I missed the Advanced Edition download option hidden at the bottom of the webpage and downloaded the Standard Edition.

Am I right in concluding that this means that I now need to uninstall the Standard Edition AND all the installation files using MS Cleanup, before I start the correct install? Do you have any other advice about uninstallation before re-using this terrible web installer method please?

Second obstacle - I am looking for the appropriate Management Studio Express Advanced Edition and can only find 64 and 86 bit downloads on the page, or a link back to the dreaded Visio Express page which returns absolutely no information. Please can you advise which Mgmt Studio Express Edition I should use for 32 bit platform?

I would much appreciate help with this since am now way behind schedule (and sincerely pissed off at Microsoft).

Thanks in advance!

First question: I have no experience but maybe you can use that vista "feature" to set the system back to a date before that unwanted installation?

Second question: For 32 bit systems the x86 is right!

I wouldn't use MS Cleanup unless the uninstallers that come with the products don't work.

Thanks much for both replies. - especially for the illumination about X86!!! If only I had known that before I started, or MSoft had inserted an explanatory sentence, I wouldn't be in this mess!!!

I looked it up in Wiki, but it still seems counter-intuitive that 32 bit has a higher number than 64 bit.

I'm very grateful for you taking the trouble to explain

Love the "Yak Knowledge" signature, cos I'm learning about Tibetan meditation. No temple near me, so am reading and earnestly consulting my inner Yak especially when I have dealings with MSoft communications.

I have an old book called "La Transhumanse du Pays d'Arles aux Grandes Alpes" written in the 1950's, which I imagine the Yaks would appreciate.

have a good day!
now for the uninstall......
