sqlteam was my favourite forum for many years. there were some brilliant moderators that really knew their stuff.
but this site seems to be getting a little tired now.
look here as a comparison to see what i mean:

That site doesn't seem very impressive, other than having a fairly annoying UI.

That is really hard to navigate and very very annoying.

I would get tired too if I had to deal with a forum like that everyday. Prefer an easy to use forum, not something you have to strain your eyes to look at and numb your brain to navigate.

It is a joke isn't it?

of-course it is a joke.

How can the site get tired ? The only thing it will get is overflow.

it's true that the snitz forum looks antiquated. but I like it.

many other forum packages devote way too much real estate to useless crap, and not enough to the part that is important: the post.

I stopped going to ssp (http://sql-server-performance.com/Community/forums/) after they exchanged snitz for some other forum package. It's just a pain to read when the text for a post is so tiny.

Couldn't agree more. When I come to the few sites that I do associate with, I'm looking for information that is going to help resolve a problem that I am currently facing. In down time (which is rare), I'm usually looking for stuff that I don't have a clue about and/or info that is going to make me a better DBA/developer down the road. So much to learn/so little time. You have to be selective and wisely utilize your time - IMO. Too many distractions out there.

Ha! I'm noticing the same thing. Might be time to bump up the font size.

Hi all ... been away a while, busy with other things don't-you-know.

I rather like StackOverflow. I'm surprised at the good quality of answers there on SQL questions - which suggests that its not just the hang out of dollar-a-day coding hacks. I see a few familiar users names there too :)

There are some things I like:

Ask a question, and you get a list of likely existing answers before you post. Hopefully that cuts down the repeat questions, but when it doesn't there is a voting system to decide that a post is a duplicate, and then it gets closed. (People with quadrillions of points are automatically included in the club of "Super users" who can make such decisions)

There is no chatter. Its strictly Question and Answer. I think this best server the person asking the question, and anyone else who comes along alter (via Google, whatever) looking for an answer to the same question.

Answers being voted up (or down) provides a good point of reference for "best answers", and the higher ranked answers move to be just under the question (if you use the default viewing method of "Votes")

I like the ranking system ("Who is Jon Skeet?" :D) I find it helpful to be able to gauge the likely quality of an answer by seeing the ranking of the answer's author. Of course a real expert might have joined 5 minutes earlier and have a low ranking, or someone with a high ranking may know nothing about the subject I am asking about. Overall I like it.

I think the scoring system is cute - in the sense that it encourages people to compete, and that provides content and answers. It took me minutes to get addicted and days of rehab to cure that!

I like the fact that its a single forum for any techie question. I don't have to register at a special ASP site for ASP answers, another for CSS and yet another for JavaScript. Sure I expect there are excellent sites that cover all three of those. SQL too? but the membership at StackOverflow is very diverse, and lots of knowledgeable people there. Hats off to Joel Spolsky for leveraging his previous [very feature-light] techie forum

The size of the StackOverflow community is good to - questions get answers astonishingly quickly.

I have a few annoyances too:

The re-sequencing (when viewing answers ordered by "Vote") causes some answers to no longer make sense "The guy above is wrong" ... when that answer gets reordered; but even the more naive "I agree with Kristen" - where my post is no longer anywhere near that answer

There is no "Yak Coral" type forum. Off topic posts are removed (the point IS to stick to the point, after all!) and discussion of [StackOverflow's] features etc is difficult. They used UserVoice originally, and have now opened another StackOverflow forum (Meta), but the problem is that is a Question and Answer style solution, New-Features require Discussion. A chat room would be nice so that users have a community for other-stuff.

Threaded conversation on StackOverflow is a nightmare. This is the biggest minus for me (it might be my dyslexia though - that makes it slower for me to assimilate information scattered around a screen than "normal people"). For example: I see a question, and an answer. I have an issue with something in the answer. I can write a new answer just describing that point (and will get marked down, 'coz its not an "answer" as such - no problem with that, again that IS the point) so I Comment against the Answer. That's fine. Other people comment too. I can check My Account : Recent to see what new odds and sods have occurred on Questions I have replied to (like viewing the New Posts page on a forum), but I then find it a nightmare to find my comment, other people's responses, other peoples answers and other people's comments on other answers. Unless I'm missing an option somewhere seeing what is "new" since last viewing a question I find hard.

That's actually what weaned me off replying to other people's questions. I just ask my own questions now.

I also think the presentation style is very techie. I have that as a Con because I don't think it translates well to other non-techie topics. "Stamp collecting" for example. I mean, you need an openID to sign up (cool idea, first time I've seen it, and I did already have a WordPress account, so it was easy ... and I expect that is the way forward. But how many ordinary mortals have an OpenID?

But if you CAN get people to answer questions in your "Stamp Collecting Stack Exchange" then I reckon the google spider food it provides probably gives you an exceptionally good hit rate. (I suppose I ought to try googling a few questions and seeing how StackOverflow's ranking compares to other conventional Forums ...)

I'll get my coat now!!

As you may have noticed we are running the StackOverflow code at http://ask.sqlteam.com

This thread was pretty entertaining early on. I was in the queue for the beta but didn't know how far down I was or when I'd get in or even if I'd launch the site so I just decided to keep quiet.

Well, it's up now so go ask some questions. Answer some questions. Let me know what you think.
