Hi : What is the best way to buy SQL server 2005 for my company .... Can i just buy it off the web ?? also, How long will SQL server 2005 be supported ?i'm deciding between standard and enterprise edition ... any suggestions on the differences to watch out for .. I live in the toronto Canada area.Pricing i have seen so far is $6000 USD for Standard and $16,000 USD for Enterprise ( both for 1 x64 processor )Thanks in advance. |

thanks Mike :I was told we have a home-brewd application that is scalable upto 2005 but not 2008 ..... that would be the only reason to move to 2005 rather than 2008 ...... ?? Will all applications that work on 2005 work on 2008 with the Service pack ??thank for the reply. |

Hmm..I'd find that a very curious statement. Why would something work in 2005 and not 2008 unless they've used some deprecated feature i can't think of right now.Mike"oh, that monkey is going to pay" |

Should be no problem in 2008. I also remember reading somewhere that there was no price increase between 2005 and 2008, so should be a no brainer (at least to me) to go for the most recent release. Unless of course, your app has some 2005 specific hang up. The only deprecated feature I can think of is Notification Services. |

I would check Microsoft's web site for a list of the specific features that are different between Enterprise and Standard. Two things that come to mind, are I believe Enterprise can address more RAM, and Enterprise supports Data Driven Subscriptions in Reporting Services, where I believe Standard does not. But again, don't take my word for it, look to the original source and determine whether those features not supported are ones you can live without.--------------------------------------------Brand yourself at EmeraldCityDomains.com |
