I am considering a certification in either MS SQL Server or Oracle. Are there any pros or cons of either... I have more experience with SQL Server and I have worked up to Oracle 9i.

I am looking to move my career into database administration from database development.

I've made my MCTS on SQL Server 2005 and my awareness was: experience is what you really need.
But if you prefer oracle - no one can tell you what is the best choice for you.

If you don't have real-world experience in them, then certifications can help you get into the industry in an entry-level position. I wouldn't waste my time on them as they wouldn't advance my career in any way. Your mileage may vary.

Well, I have more real world experience with SQL Server than Oracle. My jobs have always been a a combination of Filemaker, MySQL, and SQL Server. I have the most experience with Filemaker, but I don't think that a Filemaker Certification is in that high of a demand. SQL Server would be next as for experience follow by Oracle. I figure that concentrating on one of these RDBMS's would benefit me more than spreading myself over many apps.

Is my thinking skewed?

You should definitely concentrate on just one, for now at least. I have practically zero experience with Oracle and have no desire to learn.

If you already have real world experience, then certifications will probably not help you out any. When we interview for a position, we don't care one bit if the person is certified since it just means that they can pass the tests. Having a certification does not mean you can do the job.

But really this is all up to you.
