It wasn't me either, but i do have a story about 2000+ databases...

Our office used to have our websites hosted externally at a service provider that will remain nameless . . . They offered free SQL 7 databases to their subscribers, but hosted all of the databases on the same server. There were well over 3,000 on that one machine. Forget about opening enterprise manager and trying to connect to that box, nobody had that kind of time to kill.

Based on the professionalism that the service provider had shown to us, we're pretty sure that the owner was a 15-year old kid running everything out of his garage, and his mom wouldn't let him add more servers.

Unfortunately that level of professionalism and service is all to common in the web hosting world.

Let's expand that thought to encompass a good majority of the business world.

We've got 2000 or more here (i think the count is 2300). All have various uses I guess... Different projects, different stages of projects (dev,test,acceptance,production.. actually, most production dbs are on their own server), backups and others. It's kind of a giant development and testing box that got outa hand I think. I'm just here to write a few stored procs and dts packages for them... I don't even try to understand half the practices here.
