We are currently trying to upgrade our SQL Server from 2005 to 2008. We run Windows Server 2003 and I have solved all of the issues except one failure.

The error is:
Rule "SQL Server Service Health Check" failed. The SQL server cannot be restarted.

Has anyone seen this message? Do you know of a fix?

It sounds like an in-place upgrade, just wanted to confirm with you. And What Service pack of Windows your server is running on.

We are running Windows Server SP2 Standard. We get the same error if we are doing the upgrade and if we try to do a stand alone install.

Check Windows event log and post error details when you run upgrade. Does it stop at particular step or didn't start at all.
