infiniteloop writes "Hey, my question is not exactly technical - just more of advice. At Duisoft, Inc. we are developing apps where we can connect to SQL Server from the big three IM interfaces - AIM, yahoo, and msn. Although we are working on bigger applications - in the form of shink wrap - for the longer term, we need to pay the bills and have gotten pretty good at connecting IM clients to SQL Server. For example, if we have a UserTable, we simply type "add user" in our IM client, collect the fields, and then make the call to the DB. And currently are writing to about thirty tables and hundreds of attributes. Anyway, what do you think are the CURRENT opportunities out there - custom work wise - for companies, clients who might want to build quick apps to their SQL Server via IM? We are willing to work w/ other SQL Server developers with clients.Just wondering, brad" |

Tie the status of SQL Server (running, paused, stopped) to the status of a IM contact (online, away/busy/out-to-lunch, offline). I was trying to do this for awhile but got busy with less interesting work Probably too limited to be worth too much money, more of a gee-whiz kind of thing.JustinHave you hugged your SQL Server today? |

I'd say most companies FEAR IM clients because of their users using them for non-work related things (IE chatting to friends). It's usually pretty hard to allow one type of "user" and deny others. That's been my experience with such.If you could develop an alert based system that IM's to system admins when Disks are full, CPU's are pegged, Databases locked etc, you might be able ot make a few bucks, but I doubt it. More trouble than it's worth.[EDIT]I think another thought on this is that folks expect IM-type stuff to be free. When was the last time you paid money to use AIM or MSN Messenger?[/EDIT]My $0.02Michael<Yoda>Use the Search page you must.
