| I'm on a mailing list for the local SQL Server User Group and we get a few "employment opportunity" e-mails a week. None of them mention an salary range. Why is that? Wouldn't they get more activity that way? |

| Its all about bargaining position.They want to know what salary you are at and what salary you want first. Why offer 80K outright to somebody at 60K who is willing to take 70K?________________________________________________If it is not practically useful, then it is practically useless.________________________________________________ |

Almost all the time, yes. But not always.Once I was interviewed for a consultant position for a company in Sweden. They asked me what I wanted to do the job and solve the mess for them. I was given the opportunity to see the code to better be able to give an estimate.I gave them my estimated salary and they said "Thanks, but no thanks". They hired another consultant, cheaper of course.Two months later they called me again and asked me to solve their mess. I went to them and had another look at the code.I gave them same estimated salary as last time plus 15 percent, because "Now the code is even messier and will take longer time to fix".This time they accepted my estimate and I fixed their code for them. Do I have to mention their code was cursor-based and all settings weree hardwired and so on..?I ran into their CIO in spring of 2007. We talked little about this and that and at the end of the conversation he mentioned that the code I fixed for them was still working, 4.5 years after my visit.So the money they paid me was well spent.
