In this page http://www.idg.se/2.1085/1.197099/mysql-skapare-riktar-fran-kritik-mot-sun ( I can't find an english translation) the founder and main developer Michael Widenius is critical that MySQL 5.1 is released with General Availability.He says there is still 180 critical bugs to be fixed.Kaj Arnö, responsible for MySQL user relationships returns the critizism with"Since Michael have decided to leave Sun, it is his personal engagement for the product that makes him say that things.We have already fixed over 2000 bugs."Is that good or bad?

I've been a bit of a MySQL basher in the past, and before 5.0 it was justified. I took some heart with the 5.0 release since they at least acknowledged that things like foreign keys, transactions, data integrity, etc. were actually good ideas. You know, THINGS THAT MS ACCESS 2.0 HAD. Unfortunately it seems that the guy in charge is still hooked on performance and features. My guess is that they feel if people want solid, stable and free they'll go (or stay) with PostGreSQL anyway.There's a lot of recent articles about RDBMS's being obsolete, using Google BigTable and MapReduce tech, CouchDB, Drizzle and such as examples of the direction everyone will have to go. Microsoft is going in this direction too with Azure, SQL Data Services, Gemini and Madison, and integrating DatAllegro into their BI stack. The only thing that bugs me about that is it's meant for really large databases, and while people will say that 1 TB is no longer really large, it sure ain't small either. Maybe I'm just grumpy as I get older and don't understand this new fangled cloud stuff. Back in my day, clouds were bad, they rained, and sometimes they hung low to the ground, we called that fog, and it was as thick as pea soup, and I had to walk to school in it, uphill, both ways.  |

A fantastic pair of sentences!!But this MySQL stuff...is it any good?? I've never seen it first hand and now I'm going to a job interview for a DBA position that's split about 70/30 between MS SQL and MySQL. Am I facing baldness if I get this job or is it actually useful? - Lumbago |
