Anyone have any? Any reccomendations for a coarse, or which certifications will actually be useful for a general IT admin.

This is NOT a commentary but I'm curious, useful for getting a job or useful for doing your job?

There are many areas of specialities in IT, you have too follow your passion. And choose the appropriate course certifications

ie you have networks ( and under networks you have windows, *nix etc), databases Under this you have (e.g MS SQL) and further divided into DBA, DB designer...

... You also have ERP, messaging, list is almost endless

well ive never had a job getting or keeping a job.

Interviewee's ive met with certifications have proved nearly as useless as highschool kids whom play with computers on their free time.

I have yet to come acrossed a certification that has actually proven something about the person.
I was hoping here, among the highly skilled, there would be a useful certification to get.

for example. an A+ certification doesnt tell you to use a fine threaded screw in a fine threaded hole. Or install a motherboard the correct way. or stay awake on the job. Really the only certification I see for people, is how much money they expect to get paid. LoL

But we are in the process of sking my techs to get "certified"
i would rathere have them take a useful class, than a certification for windows xp.

I may just be rambling.

the only valid certification in my opinion is experience.

I don't have any (nor a college degree)

The main purpose seems to be so that your company can qualify for the benefits of being a MS Solutions Provider. And a consulting firm needs to have their resources' resumes look desirable to clients.

Well, I have the MCP Certification by passing (70-228 and 70-229) My first degree was Industrial IT Engineer and then My Master Degree was MSc Advanced Computing Science - MSc Database Professional. Neither the first Degree nor the Masters degree made me to learn sth more! The best training that I had was the Microsoft Approval courses and of course the real life events. Now next week I will give the exam 70-431 for MCTS SQL Server and in the next month I will be (hopefully) MCITP DBA. I will not learn anything more with the certifications but my department will have higher reputation and more benefits from MS partner program. I don't know I will have a bonus but I will not learn anything new!!

MSc Advanced Computing Science
MSc Database Professional
Sheffield Hallam University
MCP (70-229, 70-228)
Industrial IT Engineer

Waving the 'certification' flag might get you in the door but your personality will do more at the interview table then being certified.

Any of the MS classes are great starting points

I dropped out of school, but managed to get the training I needed on the job. Now that I have been in IT for over 14 years, i have decided to get my MCITP as eventually want to emigate and it makes life easier. Have passed 70-431 and 70-444, am doing 70-443 on Thursday. After that I will try to go for the Database developer exams and maybe the BI exams. Qualifications are useful to get a look in, but experience counts for more.

Follow all that through and you are a SQL 2008 master I believe

I thought there were seperate exams for 2008?

The BI ones will be by far the hardest, the DBA ones have been fairly easy up until now though. 443 is just a pain as it is case studies.

There are separate exams for 2008. They're just starting to come out.

There will be upgrade exams, but no news so far on when they'll be out.

That's the hilarious thing - you can be a SQL Server 2008 Master without ever having touched the thing! http://www.microsoft.com/learning/mcp/master/sql/default.mspx

I thought the BI ones were required too - I'm sure the spammy email I got from MS said they were....

According to that, you only need the DBA and Dev exams?!?

Might have a problem with the English.. lol

Always wanted to be a master something.

I definitely exceed the experience requirements.
