North, south, and east parts of the county are on fire. Over 500 homes have been destroyed. 300,000 people have been evacuated so far and more to come especially when the Santa Ana winds pick up again. Temperatures are high and humidity is dangerously low. I believe there's been one death so far and a lot of injuries including firefighters. I'm in the central area and haven't been impacted. Air quality is poor to unhealthy everywhere. All schools are closed including universities and colleges. Freeways have been shutdown, reopened, shutdown, reopened. I thought the Cedar Fire from 4 years ago was horrible, but this one is worse. This one is the worst in California history apparently. The Cedar fire came within 4 miles of where I was living. This fire is quite a few miles away from our house but it's just decimating other areas.I've been stuck at home since yesterday. They don't want us to drive into work due to the dangerous situation. I'm not sure when we can head back into work as the air quality will be very poor. My work site is very near the "Witch Creek Fire" which has hit eastern and northern parts of the county. I'll work from home until I know air quality is good in there. We are considering moving our systems to the DR site.Tara KizerMicrosoft MVP for Windows Server System - SQL Serverhttp://weblogs.sqlteam.com/tarad/ |

more than 1000 houses burned now. I have had to evacuate my parents from their home. I have also heard that there are more than 500,000 people who have had to evacuate, but I don't know how accurate that figure is. today seems better than yesterday as far as the winds go, so hopefully the firefighters can get some containment today.-ec |

I like California and would love to live there but with earthquakes and forest fires it must be frightening. We don't have anything like that in Georgia(except the occasional tropical storm). Hopefully the weather will change for the better over there so the fire doesn't get any worse. Future guru in the making. |

Earthquakes are extremely rare here. Even when we experience one, no one feels it and there is no damage.Tara KizerMicrosoft MVP for Windows Server System - SQL Serverhttp://weblogs.sqlteam.com/tarad/ |

This time of the year always catches me out, "internationally-wise"In the UK we are shutting down for the Winter. Its dark by 6PM, and not really light at 7AM and in a week's time we will put the clocks back so it will be dark by 5PM.The weather is kinda cold and gray. Not really properly cold, but damp and a bit miserable, so my body has already decided to switch to Winter-mode. That means that I feel the need to put the central heating on, even though the temperature is not very cold [but the dampness is relatively high].Anyway, it always surprises me when the USA gets a mega-hurricane or rampaging-forest-fire at this time of the year because it seems to me that the Sea should be cold already, and the dampness here must mean that forests won't burn anywhere in the Northern hemisphere.Very insular us English!Kristen |

It's about 90 degrees where I live right now. This is very atypical for October in San Diego. We are currently in a drought.I wouldn't call this a forest fire. It's been burning on dry brush, houses, buildings, ... For the most part, the fire is away from our forests.Tara KizerMicrosoft MVP for Windows Server System - SQL Serverhttp://weblogs.sqlteam.com/tarad/ |

The fires are about 4-5 mi from where I live.. I call my apartment folks during lunch just to see if there are any evacuation instructions so I can quickly run and get my stuff out.. I dont think such a situation will arise, though. The most horrible thing is the ash falling. If you wear a white shirt/tshirt and get on the street for a few minutes you can see the color change..TaraMoving the DR systems would probably be a good idea.. not from fire but from loss of power perspective. We are considering a swing to our DR site too. And, be safe.Dinakar Nethi************************Life is short. Enjoy it.************************http://weblogs.sqlteam.com/dinakar/ |

We have our own power, so the production systems wouldn't be impacted by any power outages. I believe we can run on our own for about 2 days. We've been having 2 conferences calls per day to discuss the fires and the possibility of moving our systems to the DR site. So far management has decided against it. Our primary site is South of where the fires are and also south of any evacuation areas.Tara KizerMicrosoft MVP for Windows Server System - SQL Serverhttp://weblogs.sqlteam.com/tarad/ |

Today is at least a better day... lots of folks are getting to go home (except my wife & I) which is great. It looks like we might be displaced still today. We live in the south of Ramona known as the Country Estates and there is no water in the lines. Ramona is a remote little town that only has one main water line in from another city (Poway). When the pumping stations in Ramona lost power, the lines were drained by sprinkler systems and et. al. that were left on by evacuees that still had power in certain neighborhoods. Generators arrived late yesterday and have been re-filling and re-pressurizing the lines. Hoppefully wet can get back in at some point today. |

Yes, our housee is still standing. Thank you for asking and your concern.A co-worker that lives in the neighborhood (and who's father-in-law is a retired firechief) stayed and gave us a direct report of the house on Tuesday - they were staying three streets down from ours. At this point, we just want to get home and start the cleanup effort. I know that the pool is going to be a mess - it took me four months to get it clean enough to use last time this happened four years ago...bleh.We've been very fortunate to be spared a second time. |

That's great to hear. Poway and Rancho Bernardo got hit hard with house losses. South County isn't looking too good either. I'm in San Carlos (east of Mission Valley, west of Santee, north of La Mesa, south of 52 freeway), so I'm in that large Central area that wasn't affected. It came dangerously close to us during the Cedar Fire though.Tara KizerMicrosoft MVP for Windows Server System - SQL Serverhttp://weblogs.sqlteam.com/tarad/ |

It was quite a relief, going two to three days without any knowledge of the status of your home is a nightmare... |
