Cool - I've just posted in a Celko thread. I hope he smacks me down good and proper - anything less would be a real letdown.

Lol - it is an English exclamation of disbelief - "Holy cow - did you see that!". Not sure if the Yankees use it too.

Joe Celko is considered "the" guru on SQL Server.
His presence on SQLTeam forum impresses.

Celko has just the right combination of genuine knowledge and pompous arrogance that gives any thread he posts on the potential to become a spectacular flame-war.

He’s always entertaining, even when you’re the target. I remember clashing with him many years ago on the old CompuServe SQL Server forum. I dared to post a solution that I said would probably run faster than the solution he posted, and he flamed me for using a SQL Server specific solution instead of generic SQL. I pointed out that we were on a SQL Server forum, not a generic SQL forum, and he didn’t really take that well…

He wasn't to keen on me either when I posted a solution which included an ORDER BY, which apparently is an CURSOR operation (which was forbidden).
After that, he didn't reply to my other solutions.

Joe, if you read this, this is a new solution to the "Scheduling printer" problem on page 29 in your "Puzzles and Answers Second Edition" book.
-- Prepare sample data
DECLARE @PrinterControl TABLE
(
UserID VARCHAR(10),
PrinterName VARCHAR(4) PRIMARY KEY,
PrinterDescription VARCHAR(40)
)

INSERT @PrinterControl
SELECT 'chacha', 'LPT1', 'First floor''s printer' UNION ALL
SELECT 'lee', 'LPT2', 'Second floor''s printer' UNION ALL
SELECT 'thomas', 'LPT3', 'Third floor''s printer' UNION ALL
SELECT NULL, 'LPT4', 'Common printer for new user' UNION ALL
SELECT NULL, 'LPT5', 'Common printer for new user'

-- Initialize search parameters
DECLARE @UserID VARCHAR(10)

SET @UserID = 'Celko'

-- Show the expected output with load balancing
SELECT PrinterName
FROM (
SELECT PrinterName,
SUBSTRING('abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz',
1 + Sequence * 26 / Total, 26 / Total) AS Names
FROM (
SELECT pc1.PrinterName,
(
SELECT COUNT(*) FROM @PrinterControl AS pc2
WHERE COALESCE(pc2.UserID, @UserID) = @UserID
AND pc2.PrinterName < pc1.PrinterName
) AS Sequence,
(
SELECT COUNT(*) FROM @PrinterControl AS pc3
WHERE COALESCE(pc3.UserID, @UserID) = @UserID
) AS Total
FROM @PrinterControl AS pc1
WHERE COALESCE(pc1.UserID, @UserID) = @UserID
) AS d
) AS d
WHERE CHARINDEX(LEFT(@UserID, 1), Names) > 0

-- Show the expected output without load balancing
SELECT TOP 1
PrinterName
FROM @PrinterControl
WHERE COALESCE(UserID, @UserID) = @UserID
