I've seen a lot of them and it's still really amazing every time. The fact that it's no big deal anymore is even more amazing. It makes me feel old knowing that the average college kid today grew up in a world where sending ships in to space always existed.Jim |

to me the most amazing thing about the shuttle is that it's still limping along after so many years. it was designed in the 70's! that means the computer systems on board are truly ancient. They can't upgrade chips because the test time and cost is prohibitive. Chips that will be used in space need to go through extensive testing in space to verify they are resilient against cosmic rays flipping bits randomly.from a scientific standpoint, the shuttle is a terrific waste of money. there's really not much interesting about going into low earth orbit, and certainly no good science reason to send humans up there. I guess its continued existence has more to do with politics than science. I suppose politics is what got us into space to begin with though... elsasoft.org |

I was disappointed when the USA nixed sending a man to Mars. I know landing on Mars would provide little scientific benefit, but just think about all the things we would have learned trying to get there! I am of the "technology for technology's sake" variety.Jim |

I'd like to see NASA get back in to the space exploration business and let private corporations worry about outer space taxis. Even though we landed on the moon almost 40 years ago (this thread is really making me feel old), it would still take years before we could do it again. A catapult would be fun. Why not, we're using a slingshot to send satellites to Mars now.Jim |

Well they are projecting a moon landing in 2020, and a rendevouz with IIS in 2014quote: . A catapult would be fun. Why not, we're using a slingshot to send satellites to Mars now.

exactly. there is nothing interesting in LEO from an science/exploration point of view. IIS is a monumental waste of money. for the same money we could have sent MANY robots to mars and other planets. who knows, perhaps we could have even found bacterial life on Titan or Marse by now if not for that useless tin can floating up there. elsasoft.org |

I never read the book but I did see the silent movie where all the moon people (what were they called) would do a back flip and disappear in a cloud of smoke! On the math side of things, the study of calculus was pretty much exhausted by the Apollo project. Not much new in calculus since. Then linear algebra was all in vogue. Here's stuff we learned from trying to learn how to land on the moonhttp://www.thespaceplace.com/nasa/spinoffs.htmlJim |
