Help...

I am trying to put a business case together, as to why we should use/upgrade to SQL2005 from SQL2000 - rather than using a 3rd party software app like 'bla bla bla' (sorry had to remove name/url, as it was thought I was spamming!!!).

I am being pressure not to upgrade... and he can't give me a good enough reason why not to. I want to go 2005, as we have been using 2000 for a long time.

3rd party software for doing mirroring & failover doesn't move us or the business forward. I feel it is very much a quick fix!!!

Comment or help as to how to turn this guy would be appreciated.

cheers

Start by giving the objectives of what you want to do. Then give a detailed estimate of the actual cost of using each approach to achieve the objective. Be especially careful about estimating the out-of-pocket costs, because many people tend to dismiss costs like your time or end-user time. Then outline the additional benefits of each approach.

Be as detailed as possible with the costs and benefits, because it will give people confidence in the numbers they are seeing. Be objective in the tone of the document, because people tend to dismiss numbers if they seem to have an obvious prejudice. Remember that numbers are your best friend because they are much harder to argue against.
