I had to post this somewhere because I think it's so damn funny. Everyone here is probably familiar with the fact that there are some overly pious Oracle developers/DBAs who like to brag about how Oracle is "industrial strength, bulletproof, handles anything, never a down moment" and claim that SQL Server is, in comparison, a toy. Now, we all know this is not true, but some people still act that way.

Well, there was apparently a great fall yesterday... I have been working on a simple web site that has to (unfortunately) query an existing Oracle database. Now this database is for querying/reporting only and is a nightly mirror-image of the production transactional database. And for two days now all I am getting are "Oracle Not Available" errors and assurance from the Oracle DBA's that they are "working on it". I know the box is up because I can tnsping it, but the database is not available. Meanwhile, our SQL Server 7.0 (on NT4) which serves 20+ OLTP databases to the web has been cruising along for 365+ days without a blip.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA.....

<edit>
By the way, my boss is getting so frustrated with this we are discussing creating our own image of the database in SQL Server so we can guarantee the site will continue to work. Then we will periodically refresh it from the Oracle database, when it's up.

Hahahaha Nice

Not to mention the incredibly big security hole that was found in the UNHACKABLE database a few weeks ago.

Larry Elison really should learn to keep his mouth shut.

Two nice things about Oracle:

1. linux version
2. what we get to charge when doing oracle development

Seriously, MS SQL Server is about the only thing that keeps me using Microsoft OSs. And a linux version of Oracle is "almost" enough to get me to endure their awful interfaces (I don't have the budget to spend $000s on more tools AFTER I buy Oracle (actually I don't have the budget for Oracle (actually I don't even HAVE a budget))).
